The Vengeful Cousins

This is the second Vengeful Cousins record. The Vengeful Cousins is a project of musicians from all over to record story-songs. The songs here all have in common that they share some narrative element.

Some of the songs included here are ballads in the old sense of the word: songs which tell a story with a moral, about a person who comes to a bad end because they went astray. Some of them here are hundreds of years old. Others are from the great age of 20th century political songs. Most are mainly a good yarn: serious, weird, dark, sentimental, picturesque or snarky. Several are own compositions of the performer, but most are re-recordings of other authors – including some of the great songwriters of the 20th and 21st centuries — or are traditional tunes. In keeping with our tradition one “ballad” included here which has no words at all. Makes no sense fersher.

There are 14 musicians on this Vengeful Cousins record, playing in various configurations. The Vengeful Cousins is not really a band – to date there has never been a Vengeful Cousins concert – so much as a project of love to bring new light to some gems of centuries of songwriting. The musicians on “Return from Faraway Lands” otherwise play in bands including The Strange Encounters, CAIRDE, The Emigrants, The Jolie Blondes, and as solo artists or otherwise under their own names.

This record would not have been possible without a number of brilliant sound engineers working, as they now do, in guerilla conditions around the attics and warehouses of Europe, the United States and Canada. The songs also generated good creative engagement by several video animators.

The Vengeful Cousins are always looking for suggestions for great story-songs in any language. We look forward to your dark, bloody, brooding, funny, moralistic or sentimental suggestions for our next record. Who knows – maybe you too could be a cuzzin.
