Scottish singer-songwriter and producer Mark Mulholland, and French trip-hop pioneer Kid Loco have released a new EP, “More Rock’n’Roll Stories”

The collaboration between Scottish singer-songwriter and producer Mark Mulholland and French trip-hop/electro-pop pioneer Kid Loco started with 2024’s “Playing with the Big Boys”. Their latest track, “All the Rock’n’Roll Stories”, is a late-night hymn to the adventures and misadventures of a life on the road, which combines rock’n’roll attitude with a hypnotic groove, catchy melody and evocative lyrics, which Mark sings over a combination of snarling guitars, organ, bass and hypnotic beats, and soulful backing vocals from Pamela Badjogo. In “Another Sunset”, Kid Loco’s beat and keyboards blend perfectly with Mark’s guitars, bass, piano and vocals to deliver a haunting melody tinged with contemplative melancholy. The EP is completed with a “Rock’n’Roll remix” of “All the Rock’n’Roll Stories”, recorded by Mark in Berlin with Chris Hughes on drums, Joe Armstrong on bass, and Chris Lastelle on organ, mixed by Dugald Jayes in his studio in Melbourne, Australia, and a remix by Chris Lastelle.

A globetrotting musician and adventurous producer, Mark Mulholland has been building an eclectic and inspired body of work for more than three decades. From his psychedelic roots in Edinburgh, and bands in Prague and Berlin including folk/roots troubadours Two Dollar Bash, to the world music he explored in Haiti, Mali and Mozambique, he has worked with a wide range of artists, including Tony Allen, Frankétienne, Toumani Diabaté, Damon Albarn, Rachid Taha and Chico Antonio. Founder of the Afro-Haitian Experimental Orchestra project and Alba Griot Ensemble, he has crafted a universe that blends folk, rock blues and diverse global traditions. Solo or with bands, he has recorded more than 20 albums, with a distinctive style that is always recognisable, combining a sense of melody, rich instrumentation and a wide diversity of styles.

Kid Loco is a Parisian electronic musician, DJ, remixer and producer, who is best-known for his 1997 album “A Grand Love Story” and its sequel, “Kill Your Darlings” (2001). Founder of the seminal French punk label Bondage Records in 1982, in the mid-90s he became known as a pioneer of trip-hop in France, as well as being in demand for remixes for Stereolab, Pulp, Mogwai, the High Llamas, Dimitri from Paris, Talvin Singh and many others. In 2024, Kid Loco invited Mark Mulholland to collaborate on a song for his latest album, “Concrete Islands, Lies & Vanités”. The result was “Playing with the Big Boys”’, which was also released as a single prior to the album release, followed by a new “rock’n’roll remix” version by Mark, and an electronic remix by the Parisian duo Zaabriskie. The three versions combined have now been streamed hundreds of thousands of times.

Their collaboration continues with a new album in the pipeline. As Mark Mulholland said, “Whenever musicians get together, the conversation always turns to tales from the road, reliving old campaigns, remembering friends who fell by the wayside. Kid Loco and I have exchanged a fair few rock’n’roll stories since we started working together, and there are certainly more to come.
