ABOUT

In the 90s he was the singer and front man in the garage punk rock band Dicky B. Hardy, who toured extensively in Europe and the USA, and released 3 albums, starting with 1995’s “Why Aren’t You Screaming?” – a fair indication of the raw energy, breakneck tempo and uncompromising attitude of the band. Later he was one half of cult art-terror provocateurs Incurabili, with whom he recorded 4 albums of spaced out, psychedelic urban blues, and toured as far afield as Argentina.

All that is in the past though. In his present incarnation, Niko tours solo, armed only with his bass guitar and his unmistakable baritone voice. His songs are emotionally intense and mysterious, stripped back and haunting, tales that evoke the blurred neon lights of all-night bars and the stale beer and cigarette ash of the mornings after.

A poet of the absurd, the late night and the gloomy Sunday, always infused with a dark wry humour, Niko Novak is an artist split between introspection and a yearning for a better world, in landscapes fraught with wreckage and joy, a glass of something never weaker than a Berlin breakfast beer in hand, to keep the devils at bay, or sometimes invite them in. Niko has worked in film for many years, and his songs have a cinematic quality, each one conjuring up vivid images and drawing the listener further into his universe.

He has released a string of solo albums, and the latest, “Haphazard Reruns”, was recorded in London with producer Jim Jones (Thee Hypnotics, Jim Jones Revue) and a selection of top studio musicians, continuing a collaboration that started with 2020’s “Pankow”, and “Sentimental Drivel” (2022).
